Most homes have at least one exit – and therefore as many entrances. The door that lets you out is often the door that lets you in. It’s the door that will let everything in – unless you decide otherwise. Likewise, there are many ways that an idea can enter our minds. Sometimes it’s intentional – but often it’s simply because we haven’t been paying attention. Failure to pay attention to our thought life that can ruin a day, a week, and if left unchecked, entire lives and relationships.
Do you pay attention to the ideas that are trying to gain entrance to your mind? You absolutely should.
The deciding factor on what takes residence in your mind is nothing more and nothing less than vigilant intentionality. Do you pay attention to the ideas that are trying to gain entrance to your mind? You absolutely should. Not doing so can be lethal to your faith, your spiritual health, and your overall quality of living life as a God-follower.
Consider 1 Corinthians 10:5:
“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ . . .” (ESV)
Mind your mind. It’s one of the main arenas where we either glorify or dishonor God. Pay attention to your thought life – and how your thoughts get there in the first place.
ACT LIKE A CHILD . . . OF GOD
Let me point out that if you have given your life to Christ, you are a child of God. But are you acting like one? Consider John 1:12-13:
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” (ESV)
God has a vested interest in caring for you, His child – but you must also care for yourself. One of the primary ways to care for yourself is to carefully, intentionally, vigilantly pay attention to the various access points of our minds. If you’re not careful, ideas will set up residence and wreak havoc. They will absolutely undermine our faith.
Here are some questions to help you take captive every thought, and make it obedient to what truly honors God:
- Do the things you watch and listen to grieve or honor God?
- Are you lazy about your thought life?
- If God got a hold of your smart phone, tablet or computer, what would He learn about you? (I bet you thought this was a silly question, because it’s not possible to withhold these from God. But this is the point: you know this. Live like it’s so).
- Are you in the habit of taking captive every thought, ensuring it honors God and complies with His Word, the Bible?
Pay attention to what you let in through the back door of your mind. You may be suffering unnecessarily, when all you need to do is shut the door.
A penny for your (captive) thoughts? I’d love to know . . .
